The Fall 2022 Momiform: What to Wear for the Rest of the Year
September 12, 2022
(click above to shop exact items) It’s here, friends! I do a Momiform roundup a few times a year and the amount of you who have reached out saying you were waiting to shop until it was released made me feel absolutely giddy. As a former stylist, helping women feel confident in their purchases is one of my favorite things I get to do so this makes my day. I call this “The Momiform” because I think most capsule wardrobes and “Must Have” guides put out there onto the internet just aren’t practical for real life as a mother. This certainly doesn’t mean you have to be a mother to shop from this roundup, but simply that if you are a mother- you can still declare this your Fall Wardrobe.
For some background information, I love fashion. I always have-always will. I don’t love, however impractical fashion. This is based off of my style and what I believe to be the most timeless, realistic and classic pieces for your wardrobe. Now, you may look at this and say, “is this a joke? WHITE PANTS?! FOR MOTHERS?!” (trust me, I get this reaction quite often.) To that I say- I love white pants. I decided eight years ago in my first months as a Mom that I wasn’t going to alter my style because it might get messy. If you’re uncomfortable in white, you do you, boo! Or maybe you’re thinking, “Where are the graphic tees? Where are the leggings? Where is the work-out gear?” I don’t include the things we all wear intuitively. We all reach for leggings constantly- no one needs to be reminded to purchase those. This guide is for those who want to be pushed to get dressed every day, even as mothers working in the home taking care of babies or college students or women headed back to work. You know what you like to work out in- I’ll leave that up to you!
I found early on in motherhood that getting dressed for my day- even in a tee and sweats that are a bit more elevated than my yoga pants- made me feel more like myself. I also love the act of getting dressed to “clock-in” and undressed to “clock-out.” It gives boundaries to the often boundary-less days of motherhood. I hope you find some wardrobe staples in this guide! Be sure to send me a message when you purchase something and let me know what you’d love to see as it relates to fashion. Lets dive in.
Crossbody Bag. This exact bag is my newest bag investment and I rave about it endlessly in this post here. I can’t get over how perfect it has been and it was made for Fall wardrobes for sure. I can’t wait to wear it over winter coats and have already loved wearing it to football games, school events and everything in between this season. Here are some more great crossbody options:
Warm Tone Bag. I tend to invest in neutral bags because I don’t purchase many, but my next bag will certainly be a warm toned bag to add interest to my often-neutral outfits. These are the ones on my wishlist:
Small Hoops. Self explanatory. A pair of great earrings makes a hoodie and sweats look intentional and for that, I’m eternally grateful. The pair linked above is my favorite pair of all time and this super famous but super cheap Amazon two-pair set of cuffs is my absolute favorite because I’m a one-piercing girl seeking the look of a cool ear moment with zero commitment.
Lightweight Layer. This could be a fleece topper for the soccer/football game, the lightweight jacket you throw on after pilates/running/yoga or even your raincoat. These are the ones that caught my eye (and some of the ones I own):
Oversized Blazer. This is something I wouldn’t wear on days I’m home with my kids baking and doing chores, but I wear a blazer constantly in Fall for checking in on our home build, meeting up with friends for lunch, running errands and so on. I think it’s the piece that most elevates an outfit and my favorite way to wear it is with trousers and a tee because it feels like I’m wearing pajamas, but looks like I’m a 90’s fancy business lady. Converse help to keep them soft (see here and here)
Detailed Top. The exact top linked is fancy and pricey, but that’s not the exact top I mean–we’re talking about button downs, date-night tops, that shirt you can throw on with jeans and boots and have a real life outfit just because of it. I love to wear a unique top with my favorite jeans and birkenstocks on casual days just to add some interest to an otherwise every-day outfit. And for those of you on Instagram stories all day long, it’s a great way to change things up every now and then.
Short Sleeve Tee. This needs no introduction. I recommend the one linked above, the J.Crew mens tee sized down one size or truly any white tee you love!
Heavy Knit. Every season, knits are the star. We love them, we reach for them constantly and tend to have the same five in rotation, right? I always like to update my Fall wardrobe with at least a couple new sweaters since they’re the one piece I know I will truly wear to death. If you don’t have a great staple neutral knit, start there. This one is the exact one linked above. H&M does it every season so I own two and I was asked constantly about this knit when I was still on Instagram (you can see it in in this post.) I’ve linked sweaters all across the board price wise because while you can certainly splurge on them and it would be a wonderful investment, there are too many great inexpensive heavy knits to overspend.
Light Knits. These are for warmer days in early Fall and for days when you’ll be layering a knit under a jacket or coat. I also throw my sweatshirts in this list just to squeeze those in too because they’re certainly essential.
Cardigan. The HERO of FALL has ARRIVED! I don’t know where I’d be without my cardigans. This is arguably the most famous cardigan, worn by celebrities and fashion editors season after season. This, the second most famous cardigan, is less than half the price but still a big investment. And, thankfully, many fast-fashion stores have recreated the similar shapes to allow us to have those similar beautiful cardigans at a fraction of the cost. I think it’s important to invest in quality over quantity so cheaper isn’t always better here, but there are so many wonderful cardigans that finish and elevate an outfit while doing their original and most important job: keeping us cozy (or hiding us. take your pick.)
Simple Sweats. A pair of great sweats with the right tee and a denim jacket and white sneakers will forever be a favorite Fall outfit of mine. Throwing on sweats, scrunchy socks, birkenstocks and a great knit is another combination I’ll never tire of. I’m not talking about your college sweats here or your boyfriend’s sweats or the ones you run in- nooo, friend. These are designated day-to-day sweats that can easily transition from scrubbing the kids’ bathroom to meeting with friends. We all need these in our wardrobes.
Tailored Trousers. This is one I might get some backlash for, but I have always been trouser-obsessed. I recently found a picture of my on my way to class in college and I was wearing a blue button down with a great pair of wide-leg trousers. That was thirteen years ago and this is just who I am. Thankfully, trousers are incredibly trendy so beautiful pairs are available at every price point. Listen, if you’re shaking your head thinking, “I wouldn’t ever wear those in real life,” I get it. But I would like you to just give them a try. Maybe with a tee shirt and sneakers. Maybe with some birks and a light knit tucked in. I can almost promise you you’ll be converted in no time. This pair is my forever favorite and so many of you have fallen in love with them since last year which might just be my crowning achievement.
Dark Denim. No explanaiton needed.
White Pants. See above disclaimer about why I will always wear white pants and consider giving it a try. In my opinion, few things are more beautiful than a great chunky knit, white jeans and a great boot. Sheesh, I cannot WAIT to add that back into the rotation!
Midi Dress. If you know me, you know I’m a dress girl. Not a frilly dress girl, not a bodycon dress girl, but a dress-that-feels-like-pajamas girl. I love wearing a turtleneck under a dress like the one linked above. I love wearing them with birks or sandals to be more casual and throwing on a great boot with a midi-dress to elevate it a bit. A midi dress with combat or lug-sole boots is also a forever favorite of mine and I’m so excited to pull them back out again.
Ballet Flats. These aren’t for everyone. I, myself, swore off ballet flats because I couldn’t stand the silhouette it created when they were paired with tight skinny jeans or leggings. No, thank you. I absolutely LOVE the silhouette it creates to pair them with a wide leg pant and can’t get enough of it. If you have baked-potato feet like me, consider sizing up a half size when ordering the flats online. This green pair is the one I convinced my sister to buy because if it came in my size, I’d have them in every color. This is the one I hope to convince you to buy because they’re so, so good in leather and velvet. Here are some more favorites:
Casual Sneakers. There’s a wide range here. I wore dunks in high school but they’ve never felt me, so despite Dunks and Air Force 1’s being the trendiest shoe for the past year, I stick to these instead:
A Great Boot. Goodness, I loovveee a good boot. It’s incredibly rare that I wear heels these days. That’s partially because I have herniated discs in my back, diastasis recti and varicose veins in my legs- all of which declare heels a no no. The other reason I don’t wear heels much, though, is because I’m a work at home mom who doesn’t go anywhere fancy. However, I absolutely love the look of a tall boot with a wide heel and I’ll never move past that. These short, flat boots were my favorite last year and they were another item many of you purchased and raved about just as much as me. I have the burgundy which is now on super sale (!) Here are some more great boots I’d be the proud owner of if my feet weren’t gargantuan:
Birks. I’ve been wearing Birkenstocks consistently since I was a seventh grader at Ruxton Country School in Maryland. They’re comfortable and beautiful and while they’re super trendy now, your feet will love them forever even when the world says they’re ugly again (because they will.) (promise.)
Leather Belt. Needs no introduction. The one linked above is my pick!
