The Best Maternity Essentials You Need in Your Wardrobe This Spring
February 23, 2022
First things first: no, I am not pregnant. I know I’m off Instagram and have been open about desiring to be pregnant but it’s not time just yet. This post is a result of multiple emails asking for my pregnancy wardrobe favorites and, ultimately, my sister looking in my eyes and saying, “Jill. You NEED to make a seasonal maternity outfit blog post. I have no clue what to wear. Help.” Two of my sisters are pregnant right now so this is my gift to them- here is what I’d be adding to my closet if I were dressing a bump this Spring/Summer.
It should be said right here at the top that I’m not a huge “maternity clothes” fan. I do use a couple tried and true staples from various maternity sections, but mostly I try to make regular clothes work so I’m not spending money on something that will only be flattering (hardly) for a teeny window of time.
I’m adding the text from a post I wrote during my third pregnancy with updated links for this Spring with one addition I’ve been asked for- special occasion or maternity photo options. Let’s start with the fun stuff, shall we? If you’re looking for the perfect dress to wear over and over again that has been worth it for me, it’s this one. I’ve shared in the past that I saw this dress on Kim and Kourtney during my first pregnancy and hunted it down to find it for myself. I became the biggest fan of the brand, especially since they focus on dresses that can be worn before, during and after pregnancy. The quality is impeccable and I’ve worn some of these dresses since I was first pregnant in 2014. Now, if I’m looking for a special occasion dress, I typically look for something that isn’t maternity specific. I like to size up in a dress I’ll love for a long time because it makes the investment worth it. For example, I invested in two of these dresses because I knew I’d wear them long after the pregnancy but they’d make me feel beautiful and comfortable from the first trimester all the way through to week 40. They remain one of my best purchases ever even years later.
Lastly, this maternity shape-wear line will be your best friend when I’m going with something tight because things get real weird from 20 weeks on, you know what I mean? I don’t recommend this whatsoever for everyday wear but if my backside has any chance of being photographed… you bet your bottom dollar it’ll be slipped into one of those. Pun intended, thank you very much.
Special Occasion/ Maternity Photo Dresses:
Every DayDresses are essential for any pregnancy. Thankfully, I’ve found tons of styles for each pregnancy that don’t require an actual “maternity dress.” I love dresses and they get some of the most wear out of any item in my wardrobe so it’s hard to justify the purchase of a dress I’ll only wear for a couple months. Wrap dresses, tie waist dresses, a-line, completely stretchy dresses and empire style dresses work best and I avoid styles that have a true waist or a tight zipper. Those are pretty impossible.
Button Downs top my list of Spring essentials. I wear these with pants tied with the hair-tie trick so I don’t have to actually buy maternity jeans and when that doesn’t work anymore, these shirts get paired with my loosest, flowiest pants or strictly get worn tied over dresses. Let me tell you-having a button down or two to wear open over tight dresses is the best trick in the book.
Pullovers + The Perfect Jacket. I love a great trench coat always and forever, but they get the most use when I’m pregnant. A pullover, leggings and my favorite sneakers suddenly look like a truly thought out outfit when I throw the right light layer over it and it’s my go-to look when I’m feeling extra gross and craving polish.
Cozies never need to perform more than during pregnancy for me. I want to be comfortable above all else at all times and this often looks like switching into my cozies right when I get home. I’ve raved about my favorite robe for years and if you haven’t splurged on the best purchase you’ll ever make yet, pregnancy is the time to do it. I also fell in love with this robe at 1Hotel in L.A. this summer and O got it for me this past Christmas. It’s essentially a giant hoodie and so many people asked what I I was wearing when I made a video in it. It’s not as cozy as my first love but it serves a different purpose and I’ve been reaching for it all month. Next up, this t-shirt three pack is not an essential, because you can buy about fifty of this wonderful actual maternity tee for the same price. BUT. These were my absolute favorite during pregnancy and still. They weren’t long enough to make it through the third trimester, but the quality is second to none and I still wear all three nearly every single week. And lastly, you will never ever feel something softer than this sweatshirt and these sweatpants. Are they the absolute most flattering sweats youll ever wear? No. But size up and put them on the second they arrive in the mail. You’ll never ever look back-I bought two sets while pregnant because I didn’t want anything else on my skin.
And the very final thing I’ll declare essential for pregnancy is these leggings in the 25″ length. Worth the investment one thousand times over and I won’t own up to how many pairs I’ve acquired over the years because no other leggings feel worth putting on anymore. The colors are tempting (and I do own a few fun colors) but for your first pair, you’re going to want to go with black. This way, no one will realize you’re wearing them four times a week. Bada-boom.
There you have it, friends. Grab a new pair of sunglasses, a fresh pair of white sneakers and sandals for when you cant bend over anymore. You’re going to feel- and look -great.
Hey Jill, Thanks for such a helpful post! Can you give the name of the leggings? The link reroutes to the homepage for lululemon when viewing from the UK, so I don’t know what wonderful ones you’re referring to!
Hi, Stephanie! The Align legging is the one I swear by-I promise you they’re worth it. (if you grab a pair, I’m going to need you to report back the first time you slip them on!!)
Jill you were totally right! They are so soft they feel like underwear yet they thankfully don’t *look* like underwear! Some kind of voodoo magic is happening in this fabric though, they stretch in every way I need them to. I get the feeling they are going to be very bump friendly come third trimester – I sized up to be sure.
Hi Jill! I know you mention here you’re still off IG but I came here because for some reason I thought you’d be returning in March. Any plans to return or should I just find you here now? also great recs here – the align leggings are *chef’s kiss* xx
I have been wondering if you were ok. I hope your family is doing well. I just read your previous post and it makes total sense why you are off IG. I hope the home renos are going great.
